Three questions decide whether your Google Analytics 4 numbers mean anything for SEO. Is Search Console linked, does an enquiry count as a key event, and how long does the property keep its data? Plenty of agency reports stop at sessions and rankings, and neither of those tells you whether anybody called.
We rewrote this guide on 12 October 2026 and checked every menu path against Google's own Analytics Help pages, because GA4 changed a lot this year. An AI Assistant channel arrived in May. Google Business Profile data followed in June, then dashboards in September.
What Google Analytics 4 tells you about SEO
Google Analytics 4 shows what search visitors do after they land: the page they enter on, how long they stay engaged and whether they send an enquiry. Search Console shows the search before the click. Link the two, mark enquiries as key events, and GA4 tells you which rankings bring in leads.
GA4 doesn't collect Google search terms by itself. The queries you see inside it are borrowed from Search Console through the link in the next sections, and Google only lets you slice them by Search Console's own dimensions (Google's Search Console integration page).
Starting from zero: create the property and add the tag
Already sending data to GA4? Skip ahead. If not, the whole setup takes one sitting (Google's setup page):
- In Admin, click Create, then Property. Name it, and pick Singapore as the reporting time zone and SGD as the currency.
- Choose your industry and business size, then your business objectives. If you pick Generate more leads, GA4 adds a collection of lead generation reports.
- Add a web data stream with your site's URL and leave enhanced measurement switched on, as Google recommends.
- Copy the Measurement ID (it starts with G-) from the stream details. Paste it into your website builder's Google Analytics field, or add the Google tag through Google Tag Manager.
- Open the Realtime report after half an hour, because Google says data collection can take up to 30 minutes to begin.
Get the time zone right on day one. Changing it later only affects data going forward and can leave a flat spot or a spike in your charts. Google lists native instructions for Wix, Squarespace, Shopify or WordPress through Site Kit, among others; any other builder needs the tag pasted in through its custom HTML feature.
Everything GA4 records is an event. A page load is page_view, a click on a link to another site is click, and each event carries parameters such as the page URL or the link domain (Google's page on events). Two kinds arrive on their own, automatically collected and enhanced measurement events. You add the other two yourself: recommended events, which have names Google has already defined, and custom events. Custom events don't show up in most standard reports, so use a recommended name such as generate_lead whenever one fits.
Fix these GA4 settings before you trust an SEO number
All six live in Admin. Several only take effect from the day you switch them on, so every week you wait is a week of data you won't get back.
| Setting | Where it is | What to do |
|---|---|---|
| Search Console link | Admin > Product links > Search Console Links | Link your verified site to the web data stream, then publish the Search Console collection |
| Data retention | Admin, in the property's data settings | Choose 14 months |
| Key events | Admin > Data display > Events | Star the events that mean an enquiry or a sale, and nothing else |
| Enhanced measurement | Admin > Data collection and modification > Data streams | Keep form interactions on, along with site search, outbound clicks and file downloads |
| Data filters | Admin > Data collection and modification > Data filters | Exclude your office IP as internal traffic |
| Google Business Profile | Admin > Product links > Google Business Profile links | Link every profile you own or manage, so calls and direction requests sit next to website data |
Why data retention matters more than it looks
On a standard property, event data can be kept for 2 months or 14 months (Google's data retention page). The setting doesn't touch standard reports, which keep their aggregated numbers either way. It limits explorations and funnel reports, which is where you'd go to compare organic landing pages across two years.
So a property left on 2 months will show you last year in Traffic acquisition and then return an empty exploration for the same dates. Raising it to 14 months applies to data you've already collected and haven't lost yet. Google waits 24 hours before applying the change, and you can undo it during that window.
Link Search Console and publish its reports
The link puts Google search queries and average position inside GA4, next to the clicks and impressions for each landing page. You need the Editor role on the Analytics property, and you have to be a verified owner of the site in Search Console. You can verify during the linking flow if you haven't yet.
- In Admin, under Product links, click Search Console Links.
- Click Link, then Choose accounts, and pick the Search Console property you manage.
- Click Confirm and Next, then select the web data stream for your site.
- Review the settings and submit.
- Back in Reports, open Library at the bottom of the left navigation, find the Search Console collection, click More and choose Publish.
Step 5 is the one most setups miss. Google leaves the Search Console collection unpublished by default, so the link works while the reports stay hidden. Once it's published, two reports appear in the left menu under Search Console: Google organic search queries, and Google organic search traffic (Google's report page).
A few limits are worth knowing before you build a monthly report on them:
- One web data stream links to one Search Console property, and that works the other way round too.
- You can't edit a link. You delete it and make a new one.
- Search Console metrics only combine with three GA4 dimensions: Landing page, Country, Device.
- The reports can't draw time-series charts.
- Data arrives 48 hours after Search Console collects it, and you get 16 months at most because that's all Search Console keeps.
How far back the data goes depends on the order you did things in. If the web data stream existed before you verified the site, data starts from the day of verification; if you verified first, it starts from the day you created the stream. See GA4 setupThe GA4 reports that answer SEO questions
GA4 ships with dozens of reports. For SEO you'll use about seven, and each one answers a question you'd put to your agency anyway.
| Your question | Report | How to open it |
|---|---|---|
| Is organic traffic going up? | Traffic acquisition | Reports > Acquisition > Traffic acquisition, then read the Organic Search row |
| Which pages do search visitors enter on, and do they enquire? | Landing page | Reports > Engagement > Landing page, with Session source / medium as a secondary dimension |
| What did people search on Google? | Google organic search queries | Search Console collection, once published |
| Which pages get clicks from Google but lose the visitor? | Google organic search traffic | Reports > Search Console > Google organic search traffic |
| Which pages hold attention? | Pages and screens | Reports > Engagement > Pages and screens |
| What do visitors search for on my own site? | An exploration | Use the Search term dimension, which needs site search switched on |
| How many visits came from ChatGPT or Gemini? | Traffic acquisition | The AI Assistant row, which Google added in May 2026 |
To see Google on its own in Traffic acquisition, type google / organic into the search bar above the table, as Google's Traffic acquisition page suggests. The Organic Search channel is wider than that, because it counts every search engine on Google's source list plus clicks from Google's AI Overviews and AI Mode. The two Search Console reports cover Google alone.
The Landing page report already carries a key events column next to sessions and average engagement time per session (Google's Landing page report page). Sort by that column with the organic rows showing and you have the pages that turn search traffic into enquiries. Those are the pages to protect when you redesign the site.
Site search is keyword research you already own
With site search on in enhanced measurement, GA4 records a view_search_results event whenever a results page loads with q, s, search, query or keyword in the URL, and you can add your own parameter (Google's enhanced measurement page). The terms land in the Search term dimension. If people keep searching your site for "price list" or "Jurong outlet", your pages aren't answering that from the menu, and a page that does might rank as well.
Small sites will hit data thresholds here. Google withholds rows containing search query information when too few users are behind them, and a wider date range is the one fix it offers (Google's data thresholds page).
Follow search visitors with a path exploration
Standard reports tell you where people landed. A path exploration shows what they did next, or, working backwards, what they read before an enquiry (Google's path exploration page). In Explore, under Start a new exploration, click the Path exploration template. Click Start over, choose Ending point, and set it to your WhatsApp or form event. The graph shows the top 5 steps at each point, and + More takes it to 20.
Run it on a month of organic traffic to see which pages people read just before they get in touch. Those pages deserve your next round of internal links and content updates.
Build an audience of organic visitors
In Admin, under Data display, click Audiences, then New audience and Create a custom audience (Google's audiences page). Add a condition for visitors who arrived through Organic Search. New audiences take 24 to 48 hours to fill. If Google Ads is linked with personalised advertising left on, the audience is shared to Ads and prefilled with up to 30 days of users, so you can show an ad to people who first found you on Google. A standard property holds up to 100 audiences.
Count enquiries with key events
Google announced key events on 21 March 2024 to replace what GA4 used to call conversions. A key event is now any event you mark as important to the business, and the word conversion is kept for actions you measure and bid on in Google Ads (Google's conversions page). Your old conversion data carried over under the new name, so year-on-year comparisons still work.
For an SEO report, the ones that count are the events that mean a lead: a form submitted, a WhatsApp chat opened, a booking made. Page views and scrolls don't belong on the list. A standard property lets you mark up to 30 events, and Google marks purchase by default (Google's setup page).
- In Admin, under Data display, click Events.
- Find the event in the Recent events tab and click the star beside it.
- Give it up to 24 hours to appear in standard reports, though Realtime picks it up within minutes.
A star counts from that day forward and doesn't rewrite history. If you plan to judge an SEO campaign by enquiries in March, the event has to be starred before March starts.
Turn a WhatsApp click into an event you can count
Enhanced measurement already records outbound clicks as an event called click, with the link URL attached. You can build a new event from it without touching code, and every step happens in Admin (Google's page on creating events):
- In Admin, under Data display, click Events, then Create event.
- Name it whatsapp_click.
- Add two matching conditions: event_name equals click, and link_url contains wa.me.
- Save, wait an hour or more for it to start, then star whatsapp_click.
If your button opens api.whatsapp.com instead, match that. A thank-you page after your contact form works the same way: create generate_lead, Google's recommended name for a form submission, with page_view as the matching event and the thank-you path in page_location. GA4 allows up to 50 created events, and none of them apply to past data.
Check it fires in DebugView
Turn on debug mode for your own browser with Google Tag Assistant, then go to Admin > Data display > DebugView and send yourself a test enquiry. The Seconds stream lists events from the last 60 seconds (Google's DebugView page). Seeing nothing? If your site has a cookie banner, accept analytics cookies first, because DebugView hides events from anyone who hasn't consented.
Track visits from AI assistants like ChatGPT
Before May 2026, a visitor who clicked a link in a ChatGPT answer usually landed under Referral, mixed in with blogs and directories. On 13 May 2026 Google added an AI Assistant channel to the default channel group (Google Analytics release notes). When the referrer matches Google's list of AI assistants, GA4 sets the medium to ai-assistant and the campaign to (ai-assistant), and those visits get their own row in Traffic acquisition.
Google's channel definition names sources like ChatGPT, Gemini, Deepseek, Copilot or Grok, and the release note mentions Claude (Google's default channel group page). Clicks from Google's own AI Overviews and AI Mode are left out of the channel. GA4 counts them as Organic Search, and Search Console reports them in the Performance report under the Web search type (Google Search Central on AI features).
The channel only sees clicks. When ChatGPT recommends your business by name and the reader phones you without visiting, GA4 never hears about it, so treat the AI Assistant number as a floor.
Build your own AI channel for what Google's list misses
Google doesn't say whether the new channel reaches back before May 2026, and its list won't hold every tool your customers use. A custom channel group solves both, because custom groups apply to your reports retroactively (Google's custom channel groups page). Google's own example on that page includes Perplexity.
- In Admin, under Data display, click Channel groups and create a new group.
- Add a channel called AI assistants with a source condition set to matches regex, for example chatgpt|openai|perplexity|gemini|copilot|claude.
- Drag the channel above Referral. GA4 files traffic in the first channel whose rules it matches.
- Save, then pick the new group as the primary dimension in Traffic acquisition.
A standard property gets two custom channel groups on top of the default one, with up to 50 channels each. Measuring AI visits is one half of the job; being the business those tools mention is the other, and our AI SEO service works on that side. For more on reading the numbers, see our guide to measuring AI search traffic.
Read Google Business Profile data next to your website
For a clinic, salon or aircon servicing company, some search customers never open the website at all. They tap Call on the Maps listing instead. Since 8 June 2026, GA4 can pull those numbers in (Google's Business Profile integration page).
In Admin, under Product links, click Google Business Profile links, then Link, and choose your profiles. You need the Editor or Administrator role in GA4 and Owner or Manager permission on each profile. A Google Business Profile collection then shows up in Reports with seven metrics: interactions, website clicks, calls, directions, messages, bookings, menus.
Know the limits before you promise anyone a per-outlet report. The data covers the last 6 months only. If you link three outlets, GA4 adds them together and gives you no way to split them, and you can't use the metrics in explorations, comparisons or filters. Per-outlet numbers still have to come from each profile's own performance page. Ranking in the map pack in the first place is a separate job, covered on our local SEO page.
Why GA4 and Search Console never match
Sooner or later someone puts the two side by side, sees more Search Console clicks than GA4 sessions from Google, and decides the tracking is broken. Usually it isn't. Google's own advice is to compare the shape of the lines:
"Although the total counts don't match exactly, what's important is that the general trends have the same pattern."
Google Search Central
| Cause | What happens | What to do |
|---|---|---|
| Time zone | Search Console runs on Pacific Time and you can't change it. Singapore is 15 or 16 hours ahead, depending on US daylight saving, so the same date covers different hours in each tool. | Compare weeks or months |
| Tracking consent | Visitors who opt out of tracking can skew GA4, while Search Console still counts their click. | Expect GA4 to run lower if your site has a consent banner |
| Canonical URLs | Search Console reports only the canonical URL. GA4 reports every URL that carries the tag. | Expect more URLs in GA4 |
| Bots | GA4 removes known bots automatically, which Search Console doesn't necessarily do. | Nothing to fix |
| PDFs and other files | Search Console counts clicks to a PDF. GA4 may not record them unless you measure file downloads. | Turn on file downloads in enhanced measurement |
| Attribution | Search Console counts every Google click. GA4 hands out credit for enquiries by attribution model. | Compare clicks with sessions |
| Delay | Search Console data takes 48 hours to reach GA4. | Leave the last two days out |
If the two lines rise and fall together, your tracking is fine. When GA4 drops and Search Console doesn't, look for a page template that lost the tag or a new consent banner that went live that week, and record what you find as an annotation.
Engagement rate, attribution and the numbers agencies misread
GA4 counts a session as engaged when it lasts longer than 10 seconds, has a key event, or has two or more page or screen views (Google's engagement rate page). Engagement rate is the share of sessions that were engaged. Bounce rate is the rest. Most reports don't show either one by default, and an Editor has to add them through Customize report.
Be wary of any monthly report that leads with bounce rate. A visitor who skims your price list for 11 seconds and leaves counts as engaged, while one who spots your phone number in 8 seconds and rings you doesn't, unless the call button is tracked. Ask for organic sessions and organic enquiries instead.
Which channel gets the credit
GA4 offers three attribution models (Google's attribution page). Data-driven uses your own property's data to split credit across the touchpoints before a visitor converts. Paid and organic last click gives all of it to the last channel the visitor clicked through, and ignores direct visits. Google paid channels last click hands it to the last Google Ads click and falls back to paid and organic last click when there isn't one.
To check yours, go to Admin, open Events under Data display, then Attribution settings. You need Marketer access or above to change it. Two reports built on different models will give Organic Search different credit for the same enquiries, and both are right by their own rules, so ask which model sits behind any SEO number you're shown.
Dashboards, annotations and BigQuery for SEO reporting
Three newer tools make GA4 easier to hand to a business partner who will never open Admin.
Dashboards
Dashboards arrived on 9 September 2026. Go to Reports, click + Create, then Dashboard, and drag in scorecards, tables, line charts or funnel charts (Google's dashboard page). A standard property allows 15 cards per dashboard. You need the Editor or Administrator role to build one, every published dashboard is shared with the whole property, and segments aren't supported yet.
Annotations
Right-click any point on a line graph in Reports and choose Add annotation to mark the day something changed: a site migration, new title tags, a Google core update. Titles take 60 characters and descriptions 150, a property holds up to 1,000 of them, and you need Analyst access or above (Google's annotations page). Six months later, when traffic jumps, you'll know why.
BigQuery export
Most SMEs never need it. If you do, GA4 can export raw events to a free BigQuery sandbox, and standard properties have a daily export limit of 1 million events (Google's BigQuery export page). Streaming export has no volume limit but costs $0.05 per gigabyte on the BigQuery side. The SEO use is joining GA4 events with your CRM to see which organic landing pages bring the customers who pay.
Six GA4 mistakes that skew SEO reports
- Leaving retention at 2 months, then deciding last year had no organic traffic because an exploration came back empty.
- Starring page_view or scroll as key events, which turns every visit into a "lead".
- Comparing a single GA4 day with the same Search Console day when the two tools sit 15 or 16 hours apart.
- Linking Search Console and never publishing the collection.
- Switching on a hostname include filter before listing every domain that sends data.
- Treating the AI Assistant channel as all of AI search, when AI Overviews and AI Mode clicks sit in Organic Search.
Frequently asked questions
Can Google Analytics 4 show which keywords bring traffic?
Only through Search Console. Once the two are linked and you publish the Search Console collection, the Google organic search queries report lists the searches that showed your site, with clicks and average position. GA4 can't break those queries down by its own dimensions, and it shows 16 months at most.
Where does ChatGPT traffic show up in GA4?
In the AI Assistant channel, which Google added to the default channel group on 13 May 2026. You'll find it in the Traffic acquisition report. Clicks from Google's AI Overviews and AI Mode don't go there, because GA4 counts them as Organic Search.
Why does GA4 show fewer visits than Search Console clicks?
The two count different things. Search Console counts every Google click on Pacific Time, while GA4 counts sessions in your own time zone and can miss visitors who opt out of tracking. Google says to compare the trends, which should move together, rather than the totals.
How long does GA4 keep my data?
On a standard property you can keep event data for 2 or 14 months. That setting only limits explorations and funnel reports, since standard reports keep their aggregated data. Set it to 14 months in Admin so you can compare this year with last year.
What happened to conversions in GA4?
Google renamed them key events in March 2024. It's any event you mark as important in GA4. Conversion now means an action you measure and bid on in Google Ads, and you can create one from a key event.
Is bounce rate still in GA4?
Yes. Bounce rate is the share of sessions that weren't engaged, so it's the opposite of engagement rate. Most reports don't show either metric by default, so an Editor has to add them through Customize report.
